Omigosh! There was a raccoon in our barn last night! So my sister and I, we get dropped off by our friend (we were at her house for the day) and I ask my sister if she'll come out and take care of the animals with me. It was my week to do the animals chores. (We trade off weeks). So, we go in there singing and really giggly and stuff like that and we walk in the Milkroom. (The cats sleep and eat in there.)
So I fill up the cat food thinking that's weird! It's empty AGAIN! Jeez, how come the cats always eat so much nowadays? And another thing like Where are the cats anyways? They always come out to greet us. Odd.
I pick up their water dishes and go outside the barn to dump them. I fill them up with the pump and then I come back and almost drop the water dishes. I looked up above where the cats sleep and look out the window and there was a HUGE raccoon up there! I almost screamed. My sister was poking her fingers at the chickens, laughing. I backed slowly out of the room and told her to back out of the barn.
She was like "Why?" and I was like, "Don't Question my motives!!!" So when we got out of the barn (it was pitch dark) I considered turning off the lights but I decided to leave everything as it was. "RUN!" I told my sister and we took off running for the house.
When we got inside I got my dad who was watching a move (The Blind Side to be exact) and told him there was a raccoon in the barn. "Who let it in?" He asked first. I shrugged. "I don't know. It was just in there." And then here's how the convo when:
Dad: Someone must have let it in. It wouldn't go in through the dog area- they would rip it too shreds.
Me: Um...I don't know how it got in. Can you go shoot it now? It's huge- like as big as a big furry rug or something!
Dad: It could get in through the door. Did you leave the barn door open this morning?
Me: Um...no?
Dad: It can't get in anywhere else. You left it open this morning.
Me: I give up! I didn't go out to do the animals this morning okay?
Dad: Great! So it's been in there since YESTERDAY night!
Me: IDK! Can you just go get it PLEASE?
So of course, Dad made me go with him to confront a raccoon. My sister volunteered to come. So when we got out there the raccoon was still up there, climbing on the wall and it had it's face burried in a box. "What's it doing?" I asked. "Hiding." My dad said grimly. "Shoot it fast!" I said covering my eyes. Dad rolled his eyes. "This is just great. I can't shoot something inside...how are we going to get it out of here?" He grabbed the shovel and poked at the raccoon experimentally. I cringed.
"Would you rather put the dogs back in their pen or get the raccoon down by yourself?" Dad asked me. Getting the dogs back in the pen would be hard, but the raccoon was huge and pretty scary so I chose Option One.
So dad let the dogs out and as stupid as they are, they ran outside to play with one another. My sis stiffled a laugh. "So much for the dogs getting the 'coon." "That's not nice." I said smiling, because it was kind of funny. Dad tried to call them back but they were long gone. "It's pretty funny." He admitted, "Stupid dogs."
So Dad went up there and smacked the raccoon lightly with his shovel .Then he turned it around so he'd just use the stick end and poked at it, until it jumped down from the top of the roof. I panicked! It was SCARY not to mention gigantic!!! So I vaulted over the dog pen door and locked myself in. I prayed the raccoon wouldn't leap over the door as well and run straight into me. My sister grabbed a board out of last minute hastiness and held it infront of her. Not much cover, but better then nothing.
The raccoon thankfully ran out the barn the correct way. The dogs watched it go, like "Look at how fast that thing runs!" I was like GET IT!!!! But they just watched it go. After that it was a matter of getting the dogs back in the pen.
And here I am, I have to go clean up the Barn from the mess the raccoon made. Seeing as it is my fault that it came in the barn in the first place. I pray it isn't there- if it is, either I will
1) Runaway screaming
2) Grab the gun we keep in a hidden place
3) Take a picture and upload it later
4) All of the above
PRAY FOR ME!
